Introduction to Week 6

Tell us: What is your big idea?

We’d like that question to frame the next week (or more) of posts to be shared in MSLOC430 Enterprise Social Networking (our Google Community). It’s already begun with a few posts from graduate students in the on-site section of MSLOC 430. Nikki Bussard shares an idea for a personal learning network tool; Foram Soni shares a model for combining ideation and communities of practice; Carly Mulliken explores potential uses of working out loud; and Kate Cohen explores using MOOC designs for internal training.

Each of these emerges from looking at a variety of innovations in networked learning and work. We’ve explored networked learning, MOOCs, Community of Inquiry and Personal Learning Networks (see the document Technology, Networks and Communities in the Service of Learning). We’ve also explored crowdsourcing, idea management and open design, Communities of Practice and working out loud (see the document Technology, Networks and Communities in the Service of Work).

The question we now wish to look at:

How might we apply these models of networked learning and work in new ways, in new combinations, to meet the challenges and opportunities facing our organizations?

In early April, a new class of students for the on-site section of MSLOC 430 will begin. The work that we’ve done over the past six weeks will be used as the starting point for that group to continuing creating new “big ideas.”

Week 5: Innovating new approaches to organizational work and learning

Introduction to Weeks 5-6

We’ve now had a little bit of time to explore a few innovative models that change the way we learn or work:

  • Networked learning
  • MOOCs
  • Personal learning networks
  • Communities of Inquiry
  • Crowdsourcing
  • Open design/idea management
  • Communities of Practice
  • Working out loud

We have a few resources to help us understand these learning models and the work models in Google documents.

During the next two weeks (or longer) we’ll shift our focus to looking at how we might apply these models in new ways or in new combinations to address organizational challenges or opportunities. Watch the video for examples of what we mean by “challenges and opportunities” and a bit about how we intend to brainstorm ideas.

But the general approach is as follows.

First, we’ll spend a few days sharing the types of challenges or opportunities we want to work on. Share via Twitter #msloc430 (point to blog posts if necessary) between Monday, Feb. 13 and Thursday, Feb. 26 (6 pm Central Time U.S.).

On Thursday night, the on-site Northwestern University class will look at the types of challenges we’ve identified and see if there are logical clusters of ideas. We’ll post results by next weekend.

For week 6 (and beyond) we’ll see if the clusters allow us to form groups of common interest for the next step: brainstorming ideas and sharing potential new approaches.

Starting in Week 6, we brainstorm and review (with each other) our potential new approaches. The starting point is to have your challenge or opportunity scenario in mind. Then we’ll ask each of you to go through this thinking process:

  1. Make sure you’ve reviewed the models we’ve covered. Get a sense of how they work, and what they do.
  2. Think about your challenge/opportunity scenario.
  3. How might we frame your challenge or opportunity as a learning challenge? What needs to be “learned?” Who needs to learn it? What kinds of ideas – from the networked learning models – might we apply?
  4. How might we frame your challenge or opportunity as a work challenge? What needs to be done/accomplished as a work product? Who needs to do it? What kinds of ideas – from the networked “work” models – might we apply?
  5. How might we frame this as requiring both “learning” and “doing work” (one before the other)? Or as integrated – we are both working and learning at the same time? What kinds of combinations of ideas might we apply? In what sequence? Or integrated in what way?

What do we mean – “and beyond?”

MSLOC 430 runs as an on-site course until March 12. A new 10-week on-site course begins April 1 with a new set of students. The objective for that class will be the same: How do we innovate new approaches to organizational challenges or opportunities by leveraging networked learning and networked working models?

The discussions and explorations will continue. Let’s keep the inventing going.

Week 4: Exploring technology, networks and communities in the service of work

A few thoughts as we head into week 4 of the 6-week open section of #msloc430 (video recorded Feb. 15, 2015).

  • We’re one week away from when we start to think about new ways to innovate based on review of several models during weeks 1-4.
  • Can we describe the essence of ideas such as crowdsourcing, open design, working-out-loud and communities of practice in one sentence? One tweet? Or a quick drawing on the back of a napkin? How we might try that during this upcoming week.
  • My take on describing the essence of the brainstorming phase of Open IDEO.

A Twitter assignment challenge: Week of Feb. 16

Let’s use Twitter and the #msloc430 hashtag all week to do the following challenge (also noted in the video):

  • Pick one or more of the innovations we are covering in weeks 3-4: crowdsourcing, idea management, open design, working-out-loud or communities-of-practice.
  • Describe it in one sentence (or one Tweet). Explain how it works, or some element of it that is essential to how it works. Or describe it in a way that captures the essence of the innovation. Not a word person? Draw a sketch or diagram. Post a photo of that sketch or diagram.

Here’s an example from earlier this week:

The description isn’t comprehensive – but it certainly gets at elements of communities of practice that make them what they are (learning, change and work practice).

Let’s see how clever we can all be this week. Or call on the clever people you know in your networks. Whatever you do (sentence, drawing, etc.) post it on Twitter to #msloc430. Check our Tagboard to keep track.

Week 3: Exploring technology, networks and communities in the service of work

Introduction to Weeks 3-4

In the first two weeks, we explored different models of learning in networked environments. We’re now shifting our focus to innovative models that impact the way we work or address workplace challenges.

We’ve selected a few models that may help us understand the potential offered by enterprise social networks and open networks:

  • Crowdsourcing
  • Idea Management and Design
  • Communities of Practice
  • Working Out Loud

To start the exploration we’ve created an open Google document that provides a starting point by defining each concept and  providing a list of references and resources. Participants may add to and refine this document over the next two weeks (or more).

The definitions and resources are also provided below under the heading References and Resources.

Where to begin

Begin by scanning the topics and our starter kit of readings and resources (listed below) to see what might be new territory for you and what might be more familiar territory. Note: You do not need to read all of the recommendations. None are compulsory. These are recommendations to help you get started along one of two options for blogging and discussion.

Option 1: Explore a model that is new to you. Write a post or start a discussion about what you see as the most innovative features of that model.

Option 2: This is for participants who have experience with one or more of these models. Based on your experience, what are the subtleties that novices overlook or under appreciate about any one (or more) of these models? Some potential questions to explore:

  • What makes a community a community? And a community a community of practice?
  • What is the experience of “working out loud” really like? How do you sustain the effort?
  • What really motivates individuals to contribute ideas to internal idea banks? To open calls for ideas (such as Open IDEO)? How do you inspire contributors to provide their best thinking – knowing that the is only a small chance their idea may be among the “winners?”

Option 3: Let’s leverage our networks to answer some of the questions above – especially where our own experiences may be lacking. Who in our networks can help us better understand the nuances of these concepts?

Crowdsourcing

Our starting point for exploring crowdsourcing as an innovation is the work of Daren Brabham, an assistant professor at USC Annenberg. Brabham is author of a short book from the MIT Essential Knowledge series – Crowdsourcing – that summarizes his research into the history of the concept, case studies and uses.

In his book Brabham outlines the key ingredients of crowdsourcing to be:

  1. An organization that has a task that needs to be performed
  2. A community (crowd) that is willing to perform the task voluntarily
  3. An online environment that allows the work to take place and the community to interact with the organization, and
  4. Mutual benefit for the organization and the community. (Brabham, 2013)

Brabham is also one of several academics who have made an attempt to define crowdsourcing by categorizing its different uses. Brabham’s typology consists of four general types:

  • Knowledge discovery and management
  • Distributed human intelligence tasking
  • Broadcast search
  • Peer-vetted creative production

Each type outlines one way of thinking about what crowdsourcing is (and is not). Brabham further defines a decision tree based on his typology to help practitioners decide what type of crowdsourcing model might be appropriate for their situation.

Idea Management and Design

For this exploration we are looking at a couple of concepts that are combined in an innovative way by Open IDEO.

The first set of concepts includes “idea management,” idea markets and idea banks. For our purposes let’s define this set of concepts as anything that helps solve the problem of finding and filtering through new ideas by leveraging technology to reach a diverse set of contributors. Contributors could be within an organization, outside of it, or both.

One way to look at idea management/markets is to break it down into two key components:

  • Sourcing – who contributes ideas, and how do you collect them
  • Filtering – how do you evaluate ideas to find the most promising or innovative.

Technology and networks allows the possibility of sourcing ideas from a large number of contributors. The value of this approach is the benefit gained from diverse thinking and heuristics. The challenge, however, is how to successfully filter a large set of ideas to find the one(s) that may be most promising (to address a problem) and/or innovative solutions. Approaches include using expert panels, open voting, creating “markets” in which ideas are traded and valued like stocks – or some combination of these three (Soukhoroukova et al, 2012).

In the Open IDEO case we see examples of open idea sourcing; a combination of voting and expert review to filter ideas; and some instances of these ideas beginning to take shape as actual solutions. As a design effort, Open IDEO allows us to see the full cycle: leveraging the network for ideas that eventually turn into something tangible.

For example, see the case of the Open IDEO challenge to address this question: How might we create healthy communities within and beyond the workplace? The challenge:

  • Generated 333 contributions in the “Inspirations” stage, which led to
  • 240 actual ideas in the “Concepting” stage.
  • A shortlist of 20 ideas was then created via voting (“Applause”)
  • The 20 shortlisted ideas were refined by the community and then evaluated by the community using factors such as viability and impact.
  • The evaluations were then considered as part of the final evaluation by the sponsors of the challenge. Out of this evaluation, 10 winning ideas were selected.

The same process plays out for many different challenges: A sponsoring organization poses a big challenge. A network of contributors generates ideas. The ideas are filtered and refined by the network. And a final selection is made through some combination of evaluation input from the network and from a panel of experts or key stakeholders. Communities of Practice

Communities of Practice (CoPs) could have easily been categorized in our exploration as  technology and communities in the service of learning rather than in the service of work. It clearly bridges both. CoPs can be emergent – evident “in the wild” – as structures for practitioners to become practitioners in a specific domain of practice. CoPs can also be instrumental – efforts that are intentionally designed to support the on-going development of a specific domain of work practice.

It may be most helpful in our exploration of CoPs – and the role of technology in supporting CoPs or allowing the development of entirely virtual CoPs – to begin by understanding what makes a community of practice according to Etienne Wenger, who created the concept of CoPs with collaborator Jean Lave.

Wenger provides an overview of the concept Introduction to Communities of Practice. He also describes the history of the concept and its essential elements in Communities of Practice and Social Learning Systems: Career of a Concept (download the full paper from this page). This is a long read – but among the key ideas are the five disciplines of learning partnership described on page 12.

Key questions to explore are: What makes a community a community? And what makes a community a community of practice?

Case studies also provide insights into how this concept is currently used in ways that leverage enterprise social networks or open networks. Two case examples may be

Working Out Loud

“Working out loud” according to John Stepper, who is publishing a book on the topic:

“Working Out Loud starts with making your work visible in such a way that it might help others. When you do that – when you work in a more open, connected way – you can build a purposeful network that makes you more effective and provides access to more opportunities.”

Working out loud emerges from the possibilities created by the existence of enterprise social networks and open networks. So our exploration of this concept starts with those enthusiasts who are not only defining the concept but living it as well.

Highlights from Week 1

We introduced ourselves. (Who wouldn’t want to hang out with this community? Really.)

We have a Tagboard as well as a Storify that captures much of the discussion of week 1 (thanks to my colleague and constant source of inspiration, Keeley Sorokti).

Nona Gormley created a shared Google document table to help define distinctions among concepts we’re covering. Maureen Crawford dissected the term “MOOC;” Mitra Emad debunked the MOOC monster under the bed; Sahana Chattopadhyay made an argument for “cognitive diversity” in our personal learning networks; and Jennifer Rainey contributed to the diverse-voices theme by sharing Ethan Zuckerman’s Ted Talk “Listening to Global Voices.”

And criss-crossing all this were many threads and bread crumbs (as Tanya Lau might say) laid down across blogs and discussion threads. You all know who you are. Thank you for providing the sparks that light the community.

Week 2: One path to follow

A suggestion on how we might move toward a wee bit of convergence as we close out our 2-week exploration of technology, networks and communities in the service of learning:

Perhaps 2 or 3 or 4 of you might want to co-write one small section of the shared Google document that is designed to capture definitions of the concepts we’re exploring as well as additional resources and readings. We’ll set up a discussion thread in MSLOC430 Enterprise Social Networking so you can find out who might be interested in collaborating on particular topics.

Let’s say we’d like to get a first version of the document completed by sometime on Tuesday, Feb. 10. The document can serve as a footprint in the sand (or snow, if you live in Chicago). It’ll show where we’ve been, at least up to this point.

Week 2: Lurking and following your own path

It’s still ok to just lurk. And explore. And don’t feel bad if you feel “behind.” There is no “behind.” There are just footprints and paths.
